Do the participants need to be able to swim?
All participants are given a PFD (life jackets) and are supervised on the water by Instructors in safety boats. Swimming is not a pre-requisite to take part in Tackers, but we do recommend that teachers discuss any specific needs a participant might have regarding their confidence or ability to swim.
What are the instructor to child ratios?
There is one instructor for every 10 children. Kids sail in pairs in Tackers 1 – Having Fun and in Tackers Intro and Tackers Intro for Schools. For every six boats there is a safety boat also out on the water supervising the kids.
What qualifications do the instructors have?
Instructors hold a Yachting Australia Instructor qualification which means they have undertaken training in theory and practical of teaching sailing in small boats, completed a Level 2 First Aid course, and hold a Power Boat Handling certificate. Assistant Instructors have completed a theory and practical course and are only able to work under the supervision of an Instructor.
All Instructors & Assistant Instructors have Working with Children Checks in their respective States.
What safety procedures are in place?
All Tackers Clubs are accredited Yachting Australia Discover Sailing Centres. To obtain this accreditation they must have comprehensive safety and risk management procedures that are audited. This level of safety and risk management applies to the specific location, club house facilities, equipment, and the content of the course or session plans. School teachers can discuss any aspect of safety and risk management with the club.
What happens if the weather is bad?
The Tackers Instructors will check the weather report the day before the scheduled course and contact you if the conditions will prevent the group from being able to sail. Sessions will usually be rescheduled or alternative activities made available. This is at the discretion of the Tackers Club.
Is there a schools pathway?
Schools can participate in a Tackers Intro for Schools as an introductory experience. There is the option to then progress through the three main levels of the Tackers program. There is no primary schools competition in sailing through Tackers as the program is based on non-competitive and fun participation. However, introducing kids to sailing at primary school level would encourage them to continue sailing at secondary school level where there is a racing program in many states.
